6 AFCOT 2020 It’s only goodbye... L’année 2020 aura été profondément marquée par la crise du Coronavirus qui aura profondément chamboulé nos habitudes tant personnelles que professionnelles. Pas de voyages, moins de rencontres avec nos familles et amis et ce dans des cercles d’autant plus restreints. Pour notre association, il aura fallu se résigner à annuler notre Forum annuel 2020. Je n’aurai donc pas l’occasion de prendre la parole, non seulement parce que j’aime m’écouter, non, mais parce que je voulais proposer à nos invités et membres de lever tous ensemble nos verres à la santé d’un vrai professionnel du coton, et saluer dignement par un tonnerre d’applaudissements afin de rendre hommage à l’aube d’une grande carrière. Commençant par l’école de Coton de Memphis en 1978/79, puis après 30 années passées à la Société d’Importation et de Commission dont deux années en tant que président de L’AFCOT – suivies de 10 années au sein du bureau de l’Afcot, notre fort apprécié et respecté Secrétaire Général Gérard Kassarian va partir à la retraite. 40 années de coton sans interruption, durant lesquelles il aura épousé Fanny, élevé 4 enfants... et essayé de trouver du temps pour se mettre au golf et découvrir avec une grande sagesse les plaisirs des vins de Bourgogne. We all now know what the consequences of the distancing and confinement measures have been; no travel, less follow-up with family and friends and finally the cancellation of our 2020 Forum. One of the consequences of the cancellation of our 2020 Forum that saddens me the most is the fact that I will not be able to address the guests during dinner, not only because I like to listen to myself, no, but because I wanted to propose our guests and members to raise their glasses together to the health of a true cotton professional and salute this career with dignity under a deafening applause! Starting with the Memphis Cotton School in 1978/79, followed by 30 years at the Import and Commission Company – crowned by 10 years at Afcot’s office, our much appreciated and respected Secretary General Gérard Kassarian will be retiring. Gérard has 40 uninterrupted years of cotton, during which he married, and, with Fanny, they had 4 children – and, to top that off - he plays handicap 26! Always courteous and ready to give his best, Gerard has spoiled more than a President by giving them his unconditional support, allowing them to focus on the strategic direction of the Association. In addition to his dedication, Gérard also proved to have a deep knowledge of the European Cotton Rules, the ECR, which he persistently squeezed into the agendas of the Board Meetings for updating. This of course served us well when comparing ours with the Rules of other Associations which we do to ensure we have the Ce n’est qu’un au revoir...
